RED,WHITE AND BLUE CARPET

by darrell hartman

The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute benefit was all about stateside roots this year, celebrating as it did the opening of American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. Proceedings inside had a turn-of-the-century feel, with wicker chairs at the dinner tables and a hot-air balloon inspired by one from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair looming over the Great Hall.

Appropriately, the first guest off the starting line was NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. He was followed by co-chair Anna Wintour, who arrived in a gown designed for her by Karl Lagerfeld. "He's the master, so whatever he says, I obey," the Vogue editor in chief said. Influential types have also been known to have that kind of relationship with Oprah Winfrey, who came in soon after Wintour and issued a gentle commandment of her own: "I want everybody to not just look at the glamour of this evening, but to actually come to the exhibit."

America's favorite TV host had done the glamour part too, of course—with help from Oscar de la Renta. As her friend Gayle King noted, this was one night where "the last person she needs fashion advice from is me." With Gap's Patrick Robinson serving as Winfrey's fellow co-chair, the fashion world's biggest party (following 2008 and 2009 editions celebrating superheroes and supermodels) seemed to be making a symbolic nod toward Main Street.

Needless to say, Joe and Jane Six-Pack weren't ascending the red-carpeted steps, which soon became the sort of scene your Kristen Bells and Chloë Sevignys could slip through almost completely unnoticed as the likes of Bono, Jennifer Lopez, and Kristen Stewart soaked up the spotlight.

Compared to a high-pressure entrance like this one, the Oscars are "a nice get-together," Zoe Saldana observed. Catwalker Maryna Linchuk found herself having to adapt, too. "It's really different, because they're really into celebrities," she noted. (Her date, Derek Lam, assured us that he'll be giving Linchuk plenty of love in his Fall ad campaign.)

Naturally, stars waltz into a party like this one with different ideas on how to dress for it. Eva Longoria Parker's rule of thumb? "When you can't breathe, that means it’s a good fit!" Alexa Chung, meanwhile, sprang up the stairs in a comfy-looking tuxedo from 3.1 Phillip Lim.

As usual for the Met ball, there were plenty of such felicitous pairings. According to Pucci's Peter Dundas, outfitting sample-size Sienna Miller (who walked in hand in hand with Jude Law) was a snap. Jason Wu and Camilla Belle "did it through e-mail," the designer giggled. "We've been on many, many dates," Emma Watson said of her escort, Burberry's Christopher Bailey, while Liv Tyler joked that Stella McCartney (who also dressed Kate Hudson for the gala) takes care of her girlfriends' looks first and "always leaves hers to the last second." Brooke Shields positively squealed with delight when Michael Kors stooped down to adjust her train, which wasn't quite as epic as the roadblock-creating one Zac Posen had attached to Doutzen Kroes.

Ralph Lauren arrived in beaten-up blue jeans, having assembled what was arguably the evening's most all-American table. It included two of his own offspring (David and Dylan), Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Taylor Swift, and Lauren Bush, who figured her dinner plans would involve "schmoozing about scoring some tickets to a concert" with the country-pop crossover sensation. And who did Tom Ford, in his pink jacket, plan to rub elbows with between cocktail hour and Lady Gaga's gala-capping performance? "Just some good friends," he said.

BEST DRESSED OF 13/08/2010

BY JULIA NEEL

THE BlackBerry party in LA put Lea Michele back onto our Best Dressed list for the third week in a row - a sartorial hat trick, if you will, for the Glee starlet. She wore a silver and while Jenni Kayne creation when she joined Christina Ricci and Amber Valletta at the event. In New York, Eat, Pray, Love premiered at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where Julia Roberts was every inch the leading lady in Stella McCartney and Roger Vivier. Also in New York, Olivia Palermo was in Susan Woo for the screening of The Big C. She was joined there by Sarah Jessica Parker and Donna Karan - who both wore Donna Karan.

Elsewhere, Leighton Meester wore Reem Acra to film a scene for Gossip Girl in Manhattan and Maggie Gyllenhaal wore Lanvin to see Emma Thompson's star being unveiled on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Giorgio Armani Privé - Haute Couture Spring Summer 2010 Full Fashion Show

COUTURE SPRING 2010 ARMANI PRIVE

COUTURE SPRING 2010 ARMANI PRIVE

PARIS 25 JANUARY 2010
BY SARAH MOWER

"It's about the moon," explained Giorgio Armani before his show. "I always need a hook to get into a collection, and that was it—thinking about something romantic and dreamy, far away from our everyday life. Something less harsh." The lunar references, he pointed out, were poured into luminescent fabrics, curviform cutting, embroideries made to look like the craters of the moon, and a crescent-shaped updo for the hair, which, he smiled, "is also a bit of a joke."

It made for a lightened-up Armani Privé show as he cut skirts from overlapping semicircles and worked curves into the peplums of jackets that were fastened with half-moon mother-of-pearl pins. At times there was a slight touch of 2001: A Space Odyssey uniform about it (see the leg-molded flares), and it was surely an intentional moment of humor when Vlada Roslyakova advanced along the runway impersonating the full moon in a giant disc of milky sheer-white organza.

For evening, there were many renderings of sparkling silver beading, pale metallic pinks and greens, synthetic moiré treatments of organza, and paillettes shot with flashes of electric blue—an Armani merging of haute dressmaking and high tech. The serious chic—the looks certain to be most ruthlessly competed for pre-Academy Awards—all came from the dark side of the moon. There were three of them, slivers of black constructed with various asymmetric deployments of white or cream in the back or along the flanks. The result: lengthening, figure-narrowing illusions that will have the A-listers jostling to eclipse the competition at that event, soon as poss.

Fashion Know it All: Bustiers

BY ANNE SLOWEY

I’m not a fan of this season’s ’50s redux trend. I just don’t believe women want to wear anything that resembles a Mad Men costume and so literally calls to mind an era when women were marginalized as sex objects. We’ve come a long way, baby, but fashion will never be free of historic context. The only way to change the meaning is to render it ironic, and I’m not sure designers have succeeded this season. Of course, it might be possible to work bustiers without looking like you’re trying too hard to rock the latest trend—but it won’t be easy. Miuccia Prada always riffs on the feminine with a full measure of wit, and her take on this come-hither undergarment is perhaps the most arch. Her Gina Lollobrigida–style ruffled bra tops, A-line skirts, and dresses that smack of the naughty nonchalance of a smarty-pants Lolita are perfect as statement pieces, but it’ll take a girl with a lot of cheek to pull off this look. It’s an attention-grabber that may leave a lot to the imagination but offers little in the way of versatility. You won’t be able to pull apart these looks without losing the irony, and that relegates the ruffles to the costume shop.

Marc Jacobs’ entire show for Louis Vuitton was dedicated to a woman who has little to do but dress her curves. His interpretation of
who this woman might be was rather simple and decidedly not ironic.

Still, his bustiers in florals and exquisite fauvist solids were gracefully done and could be paired with tailored pants or even jeans and look tasteful. The bustier has been one of Dolce & Gabbana’s signature pieces since their first collection in 1985, when they brought the Sicilian postwar widow simmering onto the runway with body-conscious skirts and sweaters. Never ones to stray from their bombshell DNA, this fall they whipped up their bustiers in silks and lace-trim satin. My fave was their leopard-print version. A peekaboo print like that under a cardigan or jacket is your best bet. If you’re going to don innerwear as outerwear, make it overtly amusing.

HOW TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL SMOKY CAT EYES

It is easier than you might think to create professional looking, sex kitten, smoky eyes like Keira Knightley. This vampy look can be as subtle or dramatic as you wish. The tips below will create a more powerful look in black, but to achieve a more understated look simply select light grey, burgundy or dark khakis instead.
Remember, a lot depends on your skin tone and hair color - see blonde to brunette, so why not try a few different tones to see which suits you best?

Ingredients for powerfully sexy eye makeup:

* Black eyeliner - pencil. Ensure that it is sharp.
* Black eyeliner - brush. The thinner the liquid eyeliner is the better.
* Eye shadow brush. Thin stumpy bristles are best to maintain control.
* Dark eye shadow. Irridescent rather than flat matt (too hard), or shiny (too messy).
* Highlight shimmer for under the eyebrow. Avoid garish looking high glitter.
* A good eyebrow pencil. Try to select the most natural shade for you as possible.
* Eyelash curlers - see Jessica Alba.
* Black mascara. Obviously choose a quality brand to avoid clumping and spider eyes.

Step-by-step instructions for smoky cat eyes like Keira Knightley:

  • Apply your foundation, under eye concealer and powder.
  • Using your black eyeliner pencil, start from the front corner of your eyelid. Draw a soft smudge line to the end of your lash line.
  • Use your eyeshadow brush to apply the dark eye shadow over the top of the smudged line for a soft smoky look. Ensure that the edges are neatly blended.
  • Then take the brush eyeliner and apply as close to your lashes as you can on the top lid only. Make the line as thick and pronounced as you wish, but make sure that the line is thickest at the outer corner, and thinner as you go inward.
  • Apply another smoky coat of eye shadow with the brush to blend the harsh edges.
  • Subtly blend your darker eye shadow up from your lashes to your eye crease. Then apply a shimmery highlight in white or cream under the outside corner of your eyebrow.
  • Use your eyebrow pencil to make your eyebrow curve more pronounced.
  • Curl your eyelashes, then apply thin coats of mascara, building the layers up gradually to avoid clumping.

2010 Teen Choice Awards Update: New Summer Nominations

Teen Choice Awards 2010

By Julia Nell Vogue

FILM and music's bright young things congregated at the Gibson Amphitheatre in LA last night for the Teen Choice Awards, where vampires were the night's biggest hit - the Twilight Saga scooped 11 awards, while TV's The Vampire Diaries earned seven awards.

SEE ALL THE PHOTOS HERE

Katy Perry hosted the evening and appeared as a goth, a cheerleader, a geek and a prom queen during the proceedings.

On the red carpet, the casts of Glee, Gossip Girl and Twilight impressed us with their style choices: Lea Michele in Naeem Khan, Leighton Meester in Preen and Ashley Greene in Valentino were all on top fashion form.

LWDs were a favourite choice in the LA heat - Cat Deeley in Preen, Leighton Meester and Selena Gomez chose to wear the summery shade - as were shorter-than-short hemlines seen on Megan Fox, Kristen Bell, Emma Robers and just about everyone else.
